The Saturday Market

At the Farmer's Market today  I got
A handmade tamale for lunch
A smoked turkey thigh
Daffodils
A celery root
Mussels
A piece of poppy seed cake

What I did not get that looked or tasted intriguing were
Lamb Kufta (sausage)
Spider crabs
Stuffed scallops
Homemade yoghurt
Mexican frijoles
Greek salad dressing from their groves in Greece (lovely thought)
Many beautiful breads

Spring arrives

Happy Spring.
We celebrated today by taking a walk in Reid Park which really is the most wonderful place. It was cold, 33 degrees and a north wind was blowing but not hard so it was rather pleasant. I got some driftwood for my sculptures and the dogs  had a good time. We had the plac
e almost to ourselves until we went to leave when we saw a surfer, of all things, who did go in the water. I didn't think the waves warranted such radical action but he was a trooper. It was amusing to think of Will, who is currently in FLorida, calling me from the beach this morning talking about watching the surfers. I couldn't help but think that although the same ocean, certainly the circumstances were very different. I wondered if the Floridian surfers would be as courageous as my Maine fellow.
The ice is breaking up on the Kennebec, big chunks of white squares on the blue water. I rejoice to see it and am celebrating the event by making an elaborate scallop dinner. Scallops are in season and how can I not support the local economy.
The eagles will be nesting on the point soon. I saw them hanging out yesterday. So majestic and in command of their space.
I am working on new sculptures and trying to regain momentum after my cold last week that put me in a funk. I am heartened with the weather and the promise of things to come.
My sauce is calling. Ciao.

Beating the snow blues

A month later from the last note and there is still snow on the ground.....
I am anxious for Spring. I hear we still have Mud Season to go until Spring, that is.
I got down to New York last weekend and it was really grand although only three days long.
On Saturday the sun was out and everyone and their brother and dogs were in Central Park. There were skaters and babies, boaters and bikers, grannies and punks. Great fun.
I got to the Opera. Very shi-shi. The event of opera-ing is so much more than the show. The place was packed and there were many dressed to the nines.
For an entomology of this phrase www.worldwidewords.org/q/qa-nin1.htm may amuse you)
The other great find was off of MAdison Ave. on 78th street- Lady M Confections. It was awesome to have cake and coffee here. If you find yourself near the Whitney or the Metropolitan Museum, or merely shopping at the high end boutiques of Madison Ave. you may want to stop here to revive your flagging spirits.
It is hard to come home when there is so much ground to be seen and explored in NYC. I try toto regroup and begin my Mud Season projects. I  am fighting a cold and general disgruntlement. Not a good time to write.
